This is how it all got started.
I have been working in system engineering for industrial water and sewage treatment for 25 years. My first encounter with seawater aquariums was when I visited a friend in 1999. Whereas I was fascinated by the brilliant colors and diversity of animals, I was also shocked at the state of technology and the water treatment methods that were common at that time. Soon afterwards, I had my first aquarium with approx. 800 liters (210 gal) of water volume. I experimented with several methods that were common back then, but only with moderate success.

Inspired by the new discoveries in the field of aquaculture, I started studying biological water treatment by bacteria (Prodibio) and targeted feeding of bacteria intensively in 2001. Then, mid-2003, I put together a 3000 liter (800 gal) aquarium with reef ceramic, dead sand and with no live stones! The tank was inoculated with Prodibio bacteria, and water treatment was performed exclusively by skimming, zeolite and our own bacteria feed. As a result, it was always possible to keep the nitrate and phosphate levels below the detection limit despite a large fish population (several giant angel fish, among others). By continuous R & D activities, this bacteria feed, which provides both bacteria and corals with all they need, was developed into an all-in-one preparation. In 2006, I founded buntesriff, which stands for colorful reef, in response to an increasing demand for coral offspring and for bacteria feed and coral feed. Since I still enjoy experimenting with new ideas and strive to optimize existing products, we now have a number of other useful products by buntesriff on the market.
